One of the biggest complaints I hear from people about Long Beach is how ugly most of the buildings on the boardwalk are. I hate to say this, but I agree. The boardwalk doesn’t have the prettiest buildings in town. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really nice ones, but the ugly ones outnumber them. Too bad all the Spanish architecture on Park Ave didn’t rub off when it came to developing the boardwalk. Most of the buildings are just pre-war brick boxes that you would normally find along Queens Blvd in Kew Gardens. They hardly screams “beach community.” Anyways, one of the uglier buildings (corner of Lindell Blvd & W. Broadway) is getting a much needed face life. A very bold face life: Aqua!
I have to applaud the owner(s) for not going the fucco/beige route. It’s my opinion, but I think this color is a welcome change for the boardwalk. This is a beach community. This area needs to be fun and different from all the normal suburban areas of Long Island. Aqua is very beachy. It reminds me of something you would see in the art deco world of South Beach, Miami. I like it. I think it would look really cool and cute with white shutters, but that will cost a ton. Who knows what the finished product will look like.
Some probably think this new color is an eyesore. I can almost hear it now: “it looks like a fun house!” That’s what my 76 year old dad says when he walks into a room that isn’t painted beige or brown, yet he loves going on vacation to Florida where everything is colorful and happy. Sorry Dad, I don’t mean to put you under the bus… haha. A lot of people don’t like change. I wouldn’t be surprised if the building owner(s) end up not committing to the color. In the meantime, enjoy the new, bold look on the boardwalk.
