Today is Earth day. Don’t worry, I am not going to get all preachy on what you should and shouldn’t do as far as being environmentally friendly. I do my part and I hope you all do too. Instead, I’m going to list three things that are going on around town that will make our little city more eco-friendly.
- New Buses! I first posted about this back in 2008 and today we actually get to see and ride them! These news buses will bring us reduced emissions, fuel cost savings and smoother rides. Sounds good to me!
- Trees! 70 Trees are supposed to be planted soon. I really don’t need to say why this is beneficial to our city. I think it’s self-explanatory.
- Energy Efficient Street Lighting. Paid for by the Feds, these 762 lights will save us 33% of electric costs per year. Not to mention all those fossil fuels! Plus, they will last longer than standard lights.
Some will say it’s not enough, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. Sure, we can’t solve all of our environmental and pollution problems overnight, but at least it’s a start. I would love for all of our public lights to be energy-efficient. It would be great if solar energy were more affordable – hopefully, one of these days it will. In the meantime, these new trees will beautify the city while the buses and lights will keep our city costs down and lower our dependence on fuel. It’s a win-win for everybody – including mother earth.
