LB Waterfront Warriors run through town this Saturday, (with a high profile sponsor)

For the second year in a row, the local veterans group, Long Beach Waterfront Warriors, will be kicking off their veterans’ week with a boardwalk 5k this Saturday at 8am.

When looking over the event website while I was registering, I couldn’t help but notice a certain logo staring me in the face.  That’s right… Quiksilver.  What is Quiksilver doing sponsoring a race here?  Do they have something going on here – say around September 1st-15th?

So, Quiksilver is apparently co-sponsoring an event in Long Beach that won’t include a million dollar purse.  Curious for sure.  Regardless of your opinion about the impending Quiksilver Pro, I’m giving the company a +1 for supporting returning veterans, regardless of their motive.

I was able to get in touch with Gerry Snell over at LB Waterfront Warriors and he was very positive about the race and Quiksilver’s involvement.  He said that they were approached by Quiksilver who were interested in supporting the event anyway possible.  LB Waterfront Warriors was still in need a t-shirt sponsor, so Quiksilver picked up the tab on them for this year’s race.  A limited edition LB Waterfront Warriors/Quiksilver tee?  Count me in.

Gerry said they’ve already registered more than 500 runners, blowing out last year’s total and its only Wednesday.  As he said, “I still haven’t checked the mailbox yet,” and there’s also race day registration available

I’ve reached out to Quiksilver, but have not received a comment.

And not to ignore the other generous sponsors, L3 Communications and Runner’s Edge are back supporting the race for a second year.

Some race information:

This is a 5k on the boardwalk.  Online registration is $20 and closes Thursday night.  Race day registration is 6:30 – 7:30 AM at Riverside Blvd & the Boardwalk. Race day registration fee for non-military personnel is $25.00.  And if you’re active duty military, registration is free.

According to, last year’s race had 326 finishers.  The top men’s time was a blistering 16:15 by Wantagh teen, Quines Delacruz, and the top female time was Long Beach’s own Melissa Moschetto with a 19:33.

Right now we’re looking at a high of 94 and a high-70s start to the morning.  It is going to be a scorcher.

So what do you think?  Does Quiksilver coming to town and sponsoring a non-surfing event in the community look like pandering to you or is it a major company actually trying to make good on its promise to be good and responsible to this community?
