The apocalypse of surfpocalypse: The unsOund surf Protest – Tuesday 9am @ City Hall (updated @12:45pm))

Update 12:45 pm: Spoke to soon, protest is back on, 9am at city hall.
__________
Update 11:45 pm: This might have been the most effective and shortest protest in history. Unsound is now saying the protest is on hold – comically like the event they were organizing to save – and soundin like the city council themselves have been in touch to try and calm them. I’ll update when they update. Facebook protests for the win! They toppled Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, an the city of long beach in six months. – Shaun

unsOund Surf (359 E.Park Ave, Long Beach, NY 11561) is organizing a protest via facebook regarding their claim that the entire Quiksilver Pro has been cancelled.  I personally think this event is a once in a lifetime chance. If we don’t have this event in Long Beach this year, Quiksilver will take their money to either the Rockaways or the Jersey Shore- who will welcome them with open arms.

The protest is Tuesday, August 30th 9am at City Hall. If you can’t make it, call the City of Long Beach and make your voices heard: 516-431-1000 – City Service , 516-431-1001 – City Manager.

  1. The whole city council…I am moving. I have been a resident for 35 years. The 80’s way of governing the city is back. For you youngsters the 80’s was no happy place here.
    WHAT A SHAME

  2. WHO CARES, at least now i will be able to park near my house instead of having some out of towner park to watch a lame competition that will be under contract for the next 3 years..(once in a lifetime right?) so just watch football

  3. I care you inconsiderate asshole. I am a local merchant who has stocked up on my inventory, hired more staff, spent more money, in the hope I could be able to provide for my family. Your worries are where you are going to park your car, while mine are how am I going to provide for my family. Why don’t you walk, you probably could use the exercise you ignorant fat fuck.

  4. Get a grip you narrow minded idiot. You live in a beach community. If you don’t like the overcrowding, lack of parking during the summer months — do us all a favor and MOVE to the suburbs!

  5. the out of will towners suck, but the loss for all of our local businesses will be way too great if this is cancelled. i mean come on. hustle a little to clean the town up, bring millions of dollars into our community

  6. Haha, and you think he is fat because he worries about a parking space even CLOSE to the vicinity of his house? If you are so concerned about providing for your family why don’t you learn how to compose yourself and be a professional businessman. I think you should blame your own poor communcation skills and overall demeanor as any threat to business. That-or get used to ramen noodles…you “fat fuck.”

  7. Hey Billy who are you calling an asshole. This would be a great town if it wasnt for all of the fuck ups. Lets get high drink and surf. Real classy, why dont you try getting making your lifestyle a habit and get a real job. I dont care how good you are at surfing, your communication skills lack and you are very incompetent. I just love how you assume fat, i used to surf.. when i was 15. Since then i have grown up and gotten a real job, i dont rely on waves and other people’s generosity to keep my finances afloat, and by the way i workout on a daily basis and have lived in long beach much longer than you have so fuck off. I hope your business drowns and you have to start over, because anyone who invests everything in something that can be diminished by poor waves or mother nature is an idiot and deserves to die

  8. You are an Asshole! Just because people surf doesn’t mean they don’t own their own homes, have careers, and pay taxes. When you were 15 you were a loser then and still are

  9. Isn’t it amazing all these surfers have no where more important to be at 9am tomorrow… like work? A loser huh.. as opposed to a winner? I’ll take. I bet you never lose.. not even your virginity

  10. where were all of the out of towners on saturday night and sunday morning.. thats right… they were as far away as possible. ill tell you one thing. i was walking on park avenue. Pussies. Come here for the good and leave for the bad. We pay too much taxes to wait an hour to get a slice of pizza and drive around for hours looking for a spot so your cheap ass can enjoy the beach.

  11. And how about the tens of thousands of Long Beach residents who were excited to see a World Class Surf competition/Festival?

Btw, the City was planning to give out parking passes, with only residents being permitted to park in Long Beach. Out of towners were going to be shuttled in.

  12. Did you really think the local merchants were going to make out like bandits with this conest? Quiksilver was coming in with an entire village, complete with entertainment and merchandise and encouraging people to go to NYC for nightlife.

Yeah, people would have wandered around Long Beach a little bit, but let’s face it – Long Beach is a quaint little seaside town. Besides surfing and chilling on the beach, it’s mostly residential. There are bars and restaurants, but they are nothing what NYC can offer. What’s left? The surf shops, delis and bagel places? I’m sure that world class athletes who spend their time in places like Tahiti, Hawaii, South Africa and the like are just dying to get a bagel and coffee and yuk it up with the locals. Give me a break.

So, buying a zillion dollars worth of provisions for your business and expecting people from Quiksilver to come in and drop a fat wad was a stupid business move. Your little Long Beach business means nothing to them, and Quiksilver has the business chops to know that. That’s why they never reached out to local merchants.

The town is now a mess from Irene. The beach needs to be fixed, the streets need to be cleaned and so does the Allegria. You can blame the cancellation of the contest on Theofan all you want, but I am sure that Quik had their hand in it also, after seeing what Long Beach looked like and hearing what bullshit hoops they had to go through to get everything straightened up and ready for the Sept. 1 trials. Competitive surfers are like celebrities – do you think Quiksilver wants their athletes walking into some half-assed cleaned up town? Theofan doesn’t even know how he’s going to get the lifeguard stand off of the boardwalk, do you think he knows how to negotiate getting Long Beach ready in time for a MAJOR, WORLD CLASS competition? I doubt it.

Long Beach isn’t a town that can handle a competition like the Quiksilver Pro. Sorry, but it’s true. If Quik wants to have a contest on the East Coast, then they should go somewhere like the OBX, where the waves are more consistent, and it’s more “touristy”. They are used to hosting surfing competitions. There will be less issues with things like parking (parking for the Quik Pro NY – in Jones Beach and then taking a shuttle? Come on!)

And before you flame the shit out of me, I’ve been surfing for 20 years, and I’ve been surfing the same sorry East End or Central LB spot. So, go fuck yourselves.
So, maybe the cancellation of the contest isn’t the worst thing

  13. Hey guys we should stop bickering back and forth amongst ourselves and lets focus on the real corruption facing this town and event. Quicksilver hasnt gotten the hint as to how things are run around here, and that requires paying off the movers and the shakers of this small town. If the city council members dont get their hush $$$ they wont hand out a permit to save us from drowning!!!! So lets just carry on with business as usual; council members shake your tin cup at the Quicksilver organizers and just ask for your under the table money over the table, and quicksilvers organizers just pay the council members so they can enjoy their slice of the pie, which if it was up to them it would be half the pie.

  14. There was a facebook page that hundreds of locals were “liking.” They were posting about room/parking rentals. I cannot find that facebook page.

  15. The actual website for the Quiksilver Pro is up and running. Geez, I wonder where they are going to have the performers, moto, BMX?

What a load of shit. This really could have been fun if all the conditions were right.

  16. I am reading the site right now….and laughing..hard. Apparently under places to “Stay” for this event include “The Inn 943 West Beech Street, Long Beach, NY
    (516) 432-9220 and “Sutton Place 124 West Park Avenue, Long Beach, NY(516) 431-3133” See…they care about local revenue! Ha.

  17. I am born and raised in long beach. I have surfed and followed surfing as long as I can think back to. Surfing is a great sport and is enjoyed by all types of people. whenever you are in the water waiting for a wave whether big or small, just about most of the people around you are from different walks of life (doctors, chefs, artists, bankers, entrepreneurs, students) so for anyone to generalize a crowd that will attend a surfing event as a bad crowd is narrow minded and needs to realize that YOU are not the only person who exists. Reading all your posts makes each and every one of you look like jerks. Neighbor against Neighbor, Huh? is that really community. Please take a second to think about what you are saying. You now are on a world stage. many of you may not realize this but surfing is one of the most widely participated in and followed sports in the world. Negativity is taking over and in the end all of us will look like fools. This is an exciting time, put the selfishness aside, stop worrying about your parking spaces, who is from out-of-town, having to detour on the boardwalk during your daily bike ride or jog, and worrying about who calls who what on a comment board. Be accepting and most of all HAVE FUN. Please allow this even to go on as planned. This will be such a great thing for so many people to enjoy.

  18. you people are crazy not to imbrace such a great event.
im am a surfer from tasmania australia. And i will be flying in to new york on the 2 sep just for the quiksilver pro. The long beach city should be doing everything possible to make this event happen

  19. “Embrace such a great event.”
    Are you kidding?

It will be a two-week exercise in loud mouthed out of towers coming in to Long Beach with vandalism, drunkenness, trash throwing, screaming obscenities, and whatever else we don’t need or want.

  20. Understand the term “Tough Shit”
Thats what u get for trying to profit from the hoodlums that will no doubt just about wreck this city. We have seen this before on holidays on the beach where these people come here to party and treat Long Beach as if it’s a slum like the place they come from. If you can’t remember back to the beginning of this season they you have a memory problem. But I’ll gladly remind you.

    http://longbeach.patch.com/articles/mini-riot-breaks-out-in-long-beach

A “mini riot” in Long Beach on Memorial Day.

According to an unconfirmed police bulletin that Patch received at 6:12 p.m., a large crowd formed at East Park Avenue and Riverside Boulevard and nine NCPD units were called to the city to assist Long Beach Police with what the county police described as a “mini riot.”

Meanwhile, Patch witnessed a brawl on the beach at Riverside Boulevard at about 5:45 p.m. Within about a minute, lifeguards were on the scene to break up the brawl, followed soon after by Long Beach police who had to close the beach..

Who were the brainsurgeons who wanted to see arcades, rides, and amusements on the boardwalk to raise revenue?

  21. wow, we are losing out on a major economic boost if this is cancelled. also our own local Balaram getting a shot to make it against the pros. many business spent a lot of money in prep. city hall better be ready for some pissed off merchants. if the city needs help cleaning just ask citizens to help out. im sure those who want the contest on will roll up their sleeves. I definatly would. lets come together and overcome the storm.

  22. The ONLY major economic boost we would have had was a boost to the ALLEGRIA Hotel and the Restaurants, NOT the City! . If they would have had the Surfing Competition, without all of the rest of the crap and the tents and the merchandise sales tent that was a city block long and the platforms and all of the hoop-la then the people would have not protested against it.
It was becoming a circus atmosphere and We don’t need that, especially after what we just went through with the hurricane. Enough is enough . Bring back the Volley Ball.
    This is NOT Coney Island.

  23. the city needs to keep this contest on by any means necessary. its a major influx of cash that can help our recovery. if you cancel this contest say goodbye many businesses that were banking on this pulling them out of the red.

  24. Yeah! and so am I and my neighbors who also are against this monstrosity.
Do the people who Own the Allegria and all the Restaurants live here?

    NO!

  25. plenty of local restaurant owners and shop owners who do live here, as well as the workers. the quikpro is a gift for our town. these are tough economic times and you are staring a GIFT in the mouth. or maybe you prefer closed shops and rstaurants to 2 weeks of hipsters.

  26. I guess you don’t read all the comments like the one from Chris on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at 1:13 am who is against the “EVENT” and had this to say …”I’ve been surfing the same sorry East End or Central LB spot. So, go fuck yourselves”.

  27. Or how about this: ONeill on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at 12:28 am
Hey Billy who are you calling an asshole. This would be a great town if it wasnt for all of the fuck ups. Lets get high drink and surf. 28. “and by the way i workout on a daily basis and have lived in long beach much longer than you have so fuck off.” ….. You sound like a 5 year old. Same here, “I bet you never lose.. not even your virginity”

  29. Look, I just wanted to make a point that LB really did nothing to prepare for an event of this caliber. They didn’t excavate the lots starting before August. They really didn’t offer residents any information about their concerns before August.

This work, and the info should have been done in the Spring, by the latest. If you’re going to host a WORLD CLASS contest, then at least try and make an attempt to have your town look world class. And the contest is smack in the middle of hurricane season – well, if LB really wanted the contest, then they would have had the resources to get the clean up done. Also, how many of the residents actually WANTED the contest? I think one of the big factors in actually holding a major league surf contest somewhere is not only quality of surf and quality of the surf town, but the quality of the townies. If the townies are telling the surfers and attendees to fuck off and die, well maybe that’s a little hint that you shouldn’t be holding a contest there.

LB dragged their feet through the entire process and probably just prayed we would get smashed with a storm – and they got their wish. Look at the way they do things – the lifeguards are digging out their HQ with shovels for Christ sakes. Get them some machinery – I bet that building is goddamn heavy!!

I know that unsOund and Quik really want this contest because it would be awesome for Balaram. It’s his home break. However, you can’t make a diamond out of a lump of shit. We get really awesome waves – just not all of the time. And we can’t sit around and hope and pray that TS Katia becomes Hurricane Katia and somehow, somewhere ends up in our swell window and gives us some juice that won’t bore the shit out of Slater and Ozzie, so that Balaram can have a chance to shine.

And I am sticking to my opinion that it was a really stupid move for businesses to spend money to renovate their places and buy extra provisions for the contest. From what I heard, NO LOCAL MERCHANTS were contacted to work in the village. I know you were all hoping there would be spillover into the community, but the village pretty much had things wrapped up. I don’t think you would have been making back the money you spent.

I guess we learned a lesson here. LB just ain’t place for a world class comp. And people need to get over it. It was badly executed from the beginning, and fell apart at the end.

  30. Oh, and I wanted to add that all you jerks that are using that foul language are proving the point that we really don’t need or want this stupid “event”
It will only bring in more people like you. And who needs more of that?

  31. deserves to die, thats kinda funny I have to admit. But no really the event will be a pain in the butt , but (like that transition) It can benefit some folks around here. I know long time long beach residents are easily intimidated, but there won’t be anything to be afraid of. LBPD is a good bunch. And we have a good beach here. It should bring the town a little more money and status. It is consistent with all the improvements the community has made over the past ten years.

  32. An “unconfirmed” riot? That is funny. What what that? Someone saw three black kids walking together. Or some of those goddam mexicans who are taking our jobs but we like to use anyway to help us out what the hell.

  33. How is this turning into surfers= unemployed pot heads? Most of the surfers I know are employed with GREAT jobs and surf either before or after they get home. How is all of this turning into a negative?? You live in a beach community, this is what is expected. If you don’t like it then you should move elsewhere! As for the riots, etc, these have happened during busy beach days, and the LBPD seriously missed the mark with dealing with those situations. No one was arrested-what message does that send? It’s not the surfers we have to worry about. . . .

  34. I like right in the middle of where all of this is going to be occurring, and I was so excited for the concerts and everything else that came with the competition. Nervous that it’s going to be “too loud” and that there will be “drunks” everywhere? Use some earplugs!! We live in a great beach community, and part of what makes it great is the events that occur here– I am excited for something new and different to come to Long Beach! Bring it on!

  35. Chris, if you don’t live in Long Beach, why are you even involved in the discussion? You are the person least affected by all of this on this board.
