WEST END NEIGHBORS – GRANT APPLICATION TO BE SUBMITTED FOR GEORGIA PARK IMPROVEMENTS

The following was sent to me from the West End Neighbors:

GRANT APPLICATION TO BE SUBMITTED FOR GEORGIA PARK IMPROVEMENTS

The Long Beach City Council unanimously passed a Resolution at its October 18, 2011 meeting to apply for Funds from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in Accordance with the Provisions of Title 9 of the Environmental Protection Act of 1993.

“… the City of Long Beach desires to make various improvements at the Georgia Avenue Playground and is required, in order to implement this Project, to submit and file an application for funding to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in an amount not to exceed $400,000…. the City of Long Beach agrees that it will fund its portion of the cost of the Project (approximately 50%) and that funds will be available to initiate the Project field work within twelve (12) months of written approval of its application by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.”

WENCA would like thank Commissioner of Public Works Kevin Mulligan and his staff for their innovation, persistence and hard work in preparing this grant application.  We are very hopeful this grant will be approved by the state and are committed to work closely with the City regarding the design and implementation of the improvements.

  1. The above post was posted verbatim from the West End Neighbors, but a local resident just sent me a correction with the park’s name:

Message: The correct name for “Georgia” Park on Beech St between Georgia and Kentucky Sts is Arthur Von Glahn Park. There is a bronze tablet in the park with this information thereon.

  2. The renovation at Georgia Park is a good idea if it is going to be maintained by the city. The bathroom however is being pushed by the WENCA at the request of surrounding bars, who don’t want kids using their bathrooms. The residents oppose the bathroom with a petition of almost 100 signatures. Due to the fact the city fails to keep it clean. The Soefield puppets at the WENCA are more concerned
about their own political aspirations then the desires of the west end residents.

  3. I disagree respectively..Without the bathroom the blue fence in the park becomes the boy’s bathroom again. I have even seen children taking poops behind the tunnel when no bathroom was present. In addition this bathroom is well maintained unlike the one at Clark Street.
