Questions: Why are some of the water fountains on the boardwalk already off? What was that loud noise this morning on Lincoln and Shore?

I’ve been getting a few questions from some Long Beach residents that I hope a few of you can answer. The first one concerns the Water Fountains on the Boardwalk. Ali writes:

I was wondering if you could right something about why the city hall turns the water fountains off mid-October. When I was training for NYC marathon last year one of the amazing (not) city workers said b/c the pipes will freeze. Really in October. I think it’s b/c of not wanting to pay for maintenance or up keep. I run a lot and like my fellow runners/bikers or walkers am very upset. And thirsty;)) lol. I know I could carry something but sometimes its great having free hands. Thank you , ali

The next question is from Jill, who asks about a large noise that occurred this morning:

By any chance has anyone reported anything about being woken up at 4am today? ….I woke up to something that sounded like a massive piece of metal hitting the ground. It was sooo loud. Then I hear a really high pitched beeep a minute or two afterwards, twice.

  1. I am sooo happy you just said that. I told my colleague the story and he kept telling me there was probably no noise and it was in my dream and that’s what woke me up. I said there is no way that was a dream. It was loud! It freaked me out. After I fell asleep again, I had a dream my building was being evacuated because it was on fire or it was going to explode or something.

  2. It’s funny because that day, I kept checking around to see if someone would mention it. I thought it was some kind of accident but then the lights immediately flickered. Who knows but at least we know we’re not crazy. Ha!

  3. It woke me up at 4am too! Then there was a loud buzzing noise that continued all morning and I could hardly get back to sleep. When I went to leave at 7am the elevators in my building were out and so were the stop lights and street lights at Lincoln and Broadway. I’m surprised there’s no report of what it was!
