Quiksilver Pro 2012 in Long Beach (According to Newsday)

September 2-14: Mark those days on your 2012 calendar because Quiksilver Pro is coming back to Long Beach according to Newsday. In her article Quiksilver surfing contest to return to LI, reporter Aisha Al-Muslim writes:

The schedule doesn’t identify Long Beach, but ASP North America spokesman Bobby Shadley said the city will be the location for the contest with $1 million in prize money.

“Long Beach is a new, exciting area to bring professional surfers to,” Shadley said. “The feedback was very positive.”

Yet, in the article City Manager Charles Theofan is quoted saying that the Quiksilver folks have not contacted the city yet.

I’m sure a bunch of you can’t get past the Newsday paywall to actually read the full article, but that’s the gist of it. Oh yeah, and there’s a quote from Charles, the owner of Duke Falcons in there as well, as mentioned earlier.

Is this Newsday confirmation enough to convince us all?

Charles, don’t wait by the phone, it will ring after January 1, when they can actually talk to normal people on the City Council and the NEW City Manager!!

  2. Hopefully the new council and city manger won’t screw it up again! I can see them asking for more $$$$ and Quik saying “Hello Montauk”

  3. I think logistically LB is the ideal option. I did hear through Quiksilver sources that IF the waves were not good enough to complete FOUR days of surfing competition, the surfers would be FLOWN via helicopter to Montauk, if the waves were better there. THAT is why it is sooooo important that the Festival is allowed to take place here in LB, so in case we do not get big enough waves, crowds can be entertained…!
