Most commented ‘Sea By The City’ stories of 2011 (Comment Wars!)

I was originally going to do a 2011 year in review wrap-up, but wasn’t exactly sure how to execute it: Do I post the top 2011 Long Beach stories? But what exactly are the top stories? After all, we at SBC didn’t blog about everything that happened here. So maybe the top 2011 SBC stories? But that didn’t seem like any fun. Most of those top stories posted in this blog barely got any comments, so why bother to revisit them. I concluded that the best wrap-up that I can do would be to just post the articles that we cared about: the ones that generated the most comments.

I give you The most commented ‘Sea By The City’ stories of 2011. (This also gives me a chance to show off my awesome & amazing photoshop work.) If you’re new to SBC and want to see what we commented (or argued about) the most, or if you want to revisit old wars (Comment Wars!) that you had with your neighbors – sit back, relax and scroll down memory lane.

(in chronological order)

March 8th: Avenue Café – REVIEW (formerly Monterey [formerly Corbin & Reynolds])

Ahh the diner we all love to hate (or hate to love). A few of you seemed confused over what type of restaurant this was (it’s a diner). We all argued over the service, the food and the need for another diner in Long Beach. Argue, you say? Yes, plenty of that- thus the 2011 COMMENT WARS begin…

—————-

June 24th: A plea to the City Council over the Allegria Hotel parking situation.

So here we have a letter written by a local to the City Council regarding the parking situation near the Allegria. The comments ranged from “AMEN to this letter” to  “I am very happy (and lucky) to have them [Allegria] as neighbors on my block……. ” “Amen! we love the Allegria”.

Yep, all over the place.

—————-

July 2nd: Pop’s Seafood Shack & Grill – Island Park

There was a time when this review actually ranked higher than Pop’s website via google search. Gone are the days when I bragged about that…. oh wait, I just did.

The comments here all range from: “I can’t wait to go there” to “I had the same horrible experience as the person who wrote this article.”  I ended up going back to Pop’s Seafood Shack & Grill a few months later and wrote a followup: review part 2.

—————-

July 27th: Is that a “Cat Dying?” (Long Beach’s New Siren)

Shaun talks about the sounds of Long Beach: “The gentle lapping of waves. The graceful squawking of seagulls” and annoying sirens!! In typical SBC-fashion, Comment Wars takes over and the subject changes to rants about Waldbaums, the Allegria and Theofan.

—————-

August 8th: Allegria ‘Trip Advisor’ tampering & rating update. (The Love/Hate Continues!)

Comments are all over the place – more Waldbaum rants, mini-Allegria reviews, parking woes. As I admitted in the comments, I love writing about this hotel because it always generates the most comments.

Dear Diary,

I love writing about the Allegria because a lot of people pay attention to me when I do.

—————-

August 15th: What kind of Long Beach do you want? City vs. Suburbia. FIGHT!

Here we gave you a chance to create your own Long Beach. Your comments/results were posted here: What WE WANT Long Beach to be. (Number Crunching).

—————-

August 16th: “I’m just downright irritated with the lack of information.” Re: Quiksilver Pro

COMMENT WARS! The battle between those who fear parking woes vs. those who are willing to put up with parking woes for a couple of weeks.

(FIGHT!)

—————-

August 22nd: “Multiple Fights on Multiple Floors” (Allegria Brawl)

The Allegria-haters had a field day with this one. Best comment was by Dude who wrote: “The Allegria is next going to host the WWF, this was just practice.

—————-

August 24th: Bahia Social Club (Tasty Tapas, a bit pricey)

COMMENT WARS! You say the service was too slow. You say the service was great. You say the food was great. You say the food was ok. You say the food was expensive. You say the prices were reasonable. You say tomAto. I say TomAHto.

I like the Bahia Social Club. Wanna fight?

—————-

August 24th: Is it time to kiss those grass medians goodbye? (Open Space vs Parking)

COMMENT WARS continue: Leave the grass alone vs. That grass isn’t good for anything, but dog poop.

What do we want around here? Parking or Grass? Why can’t you make up your minds!!!!!

—————-

August 25th: Hurricane Reality Check (Rant)

Hurricane Irene: Contemplating the decision to leave vs. the decision to stay.

(Should I stay or should I go? duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh.)

—————-

August 25th: Best Wings in Long Beach (ThrowDown)

The award goes to John Henry’s and most of us agree. (I agree) Their wings are actually quite addicting.

—————-

August 29th: The apocalypse of surfpocalypse: The unsOund surf Protest – Tuesday 9am @ City Hall (updated @12:45pm))

Ahh, the protest that barely happened. Where was it again? The boardwalk or Kennedy Plaza? I’m confused.

—————-

August 30th: Surfing is on, Live Site is Off

COMMENT WARS! The majority of you were disappointed with no festival, but a few of you were happy that “those people” won’t be here. I’m still not sure what “those people” means. Quite frankly, I’m a bit disappointed with those comments. Last time I checked we weren’t living in rural Georgia in the 1880’s.

(FIGHT!)

—————-

August 30th: Editorial: Soaking in the Quiksilver Pro (sans festival) Disappointment.

More COMMENT WARS: (see my comments above)

—————-

September 8th: Some advice for the Quiksilver Pro Merch Team

All I said was for Quiksilver to make a t-shirt like in the image below and all hell broke loose. I was NOT looking for them to change the event name to Quiksilver Pro Long Beach. And I was NOT looking to get into a fight with the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

—————-

September 20th: The 2011 Pizza Quest

We all love pizza. That’s why we all chimed in with our vote for best pizza in Long Beach. Shaun is still working on PIZZA QUEST , so I’m guessing the winner will be announced in 2012. In an article that will most likely be a shoo-in for the Most commented ‘Sea By The City’ stories of 2012.

—————-

September 20th: GoPro Guerrilla Jump Update

Illegal act, but awesome photos. Was it worth it? Most of you think it was.

SBC getting involve with some Comment Wars of it’s ownYeah, that pissed a few of you off, but too bad.

The call for more police patrolling (in general).

—————-

October 14th: Adelson: “Tommy, that was a cheap shot…” (Fireworks at City Council Meeting)

—————-

October 15th: Fall Festival this Saturday & Sunday @ Kennedy Plaza (Note: Bring Cash)
