Lieutenant Michael Tangney is our New ‘Acting’ Police Commissioner

Newly appointed City Manager Jack Schnirman has been busy making some new appointments of his own. Today he swore in Lieutenant Michael Tangney as the Acting Commissioner of the Long Beach Police Department, a position that became vacant after Thomas Sofield Senior retired in December (see – Long Beach Acting Police Commish Out).

Like Tangney, Sofield was also the Acting Police Commissioner, but Schnirman hopes to find a more permanent appointee. “This appointment shall be in effect until such time as a thorough and thoughtful search and selection process can be completed for a permanent Police Commissioner,” said Schnirman. “A search and selection committee shall be appointed consisting of subject area experts.  It is my hope and expectation that the search and selection process shall not exceed 60 days.”
