Rec Center Improvements (A Step in the Right Direction)

We all dream of having a world class fitness center in Long Beach – though I think having a beach and an ocean meets much of that requirement – but we’ve been forced to tolerate our “crumbling” bay-side Rec Center.

In continuing the PR/Communications onslaught that has been a hallmark of the new administration (and much needed change), a message by-lined by Parks Commissioner Robert Piazza has been posted on Long Beach’s website.

Piazza says their goals are to “provide courteous, efficient, and effective services to our users,” and goes on to highlight a number of moves they’ve taken as direct results of customers suggestions.

Some of the points are a bit general like “keep customers informed” or “post the water and air temperature,” but quite a number of them are real fixes for real problems. It’s easy to call them minor – my favorite example being “fix the front door so it doesn’t slam” – but these minor, easy, and most importantly, cheap fixes will be seen by customers everyday.  I emphasize cheap, because realistically, those are the only fixes we are getting for sometime.  There’s a bit of a fiscal disaster leftover in this town.

Later Piazza talks about the shower water being too hot, and their solution was to replace a mixing valve. While you might say “wouldn’t it be awesome to get 100 new TVs and top notch fitness equipment,” you’ll certainly be satisfied when you don’t get scalded/frozen when you step foot in the shower.

I’ve got to get myself into that pool and start training for a triathlon soon, so I’ll give you some on the ground (and in the water) reports in coming weeks about the progress at the Rec Center. Take a look at Piazza’s post here.

You can read about the dreams Bernie Shereck had for the Rec Center here before he was allegedly illegally evicted, for which he is suing the city.

  1. Apparently city manager Jack Schnirman has hired his old political friend from Brookhaven to be the new LB Commissioner of Public Works. James Laccarruba isn’t even a certified engineer, not a public engineer, and doesn’t even have a degree in engineering. Rumor is that he doesn’t even have a college degree, just a HS diploma. ON face value, no big deal- except that over and over the dems (when they campaigned) kept saying that when hiring “we should never settle for mediocrity”. Then why do we let go of a certified public engineer, a guy who knows LB, a guy who has fixed more in the the last 4 years than his predecessor did in 20, a guy with the education and certified and credentials to get the job done for the residents? Oh, and by the way, Laccarruba was Kevin Foley’s (Schnirmans’ boss) campaign manager and chief of staff. So much for promising not to hire political hack! This new crew makes every other corrupt administration in LB history look like boy scouts. Sofield, Cammaratto, Braddish—these guys beat them all!

  2. Here is a political payoff my neighbor (a LB Cop) just told me about.

The PBA President sues the Republicans in City Hall, then he supports the opposing Democrats. The election comes, Democrats win. Now the new Democrat controlled city council, settle the case (before a judge even has the chance to look at the case, for $24,999. Coincidentally, the city council doesn’t have to approve the settlement because only awards of $25,000 have top go to a public hearing before the city council and this is $1 short of that requirement! If that’s not bad enough, the Plaintiff also is getting a promotion tomorrow, actually 2 promotions, to Detective and Lieutenant!

This new administration is absolutely disgusting. I voted for them, and they are 10 times worse than anything we have ever had before. LB needs to wake up!

No wonder the city is broke!
