Long Beach Recreation Department Fall Programs

With the beginning of the school year, the Long Beach Recreation Department is starting many different programs for the whole family to enjoy.

This week saw the reopening of the pool, cardio room and weight room. The feedback from the community has been very positive. There is a fresh coat of paint throughout the building and the pool is in excellent condition with crystal blue water waiting for you. The pool offers activities such as swim lessons, the Tigersharks swim team, water aerobics, a class for those with Arthritis, and public sessions for recreational swimmers.

Children have many different programs to join. There is a soccer program for children between five and twelve. Soccer meets during the week and on Saturday, depending on the age of the child. Children between the ages of five and ten can register for the football program, which meets on Monday and Thursday evenings. In conjunction with the football program, there is cheerleading for anyone age seven to twelve. There is also the running club for children between the ages of seven and fifteen. The running club meets on the boardwalk on Sunday afternoons at Riverside Boulevard.

The parents have their own programs to join. An adult volleyball league meets weeknights at Lindell School. Yoga classes meet weeknights and on weekends. If you are looking for a tougher workout, then try boot camp. There is also a new program starting on the Recreation Fields for women. On Sunday afternoons, there will be a women’s kickball league. This is the same game that you played on the playground when you were in elementary school.

Also, don’t forget to take advantage of the Ice Arena. There are a lot of different opportunities to take advantage of from hockey leagues to skating sessions. Information can be found on The Ice Arena website at www.longbeachny.org/icearena.

Information about the Recreation Department operating hours, facilities and rates as well as applications for fall programs can be found at www.longbeachny.org/rec. If you have any questions, please call 431-3890 for theRecreation Center or 208-6136 for the Ice Arena. Registration for any of the programs can be done in the main lobby of the Recreation Center.

  1. LB parents have to shell out 180 dollars for Prosoccer Kids for 3 and 4 year old programs that only run 6 weeks. The Rec should start a league for soccer and other 3-4year old programs.

  2. The Rec has a Masters swim program with a very good coach. THe “practices” are Mon-Thu at 6am and weekend practices at noon. Masters will be starting Monday at 6am, the calendar on golba.org should be updated soon.
