  1. If you’re looking to read more about bike lanes in an urban environment, BoingBoing made reference to a NYC DOT study which found that retail sales increased 49% where *protected* bike lanes were put in (as opposed to 3% boro-wide during the same period):

    They also found things like decreased injuries, a decrease in speeding in conjunction with an increased in median speeds (this means overall, people are moving faster through the streets, but not because there is more speeding!), less commercial vacancies, increase of seated pedestrians at business fronts, decrease in green house gases, etc.

    All of these things may not happen here, but it looks like rethinking surface streets benefits everyone in one way or another, not just people who want to bike/save the environment/be healthier.
