Long Beach Cinemas? Stay tuned :)

There are lots of rumors floating around regarding Long Beach Cinemas. Here are the ones I have heard:

  • RUMOR: They aren’t really opening, the whole thing was a ploy with the city to settle the super block.
  • RUMOR: The property is for sale and it won’t be a theater.
  • RUMOR: They are working with some folks to turn it into something special (performing arts theater, etc.).
  • Adding to that RUMOR:  How the folks who run Cinema Arts in Huntington tried to get involved, but nothing came of it.

I just got off the phone with Philips International. They told me the theater is going to open very soon, but couldn’t give me an exact date. They also told me that it’s going to be the same old theater. Yep, no independent films. Sorry, Film buffs…..

But…..I was given contact info of the person who is in charge of the theater itself. That person won’t be available until the end of the week, but I will do my best to try to convince him how they should shake things up; even if there is a mix of mainstream and Indie flicks. Like what we discussed on this blog before (see- What Kind of Movie Theater Do You Want ), I really believe there is an opportunity to do something special with that space. Hopefully I can give them a few ideas, if it’s not too late.

Wish me luck and stay tuned….

  1. Good luck! How about linking them to the “What Kind of Movie Theater Do You Want?” post so they can see all the input from residents?

  2. I’ll have the article opened and mention the ideas to the guy while on the phone, but if you or anybody wants to add anything, please let me know here! I’ll tell him about the links as well. good idea 🙂

  3. Thanks! Just like so many others, I would love to see some indie films featured. Decent beer on tap would be fantastic, as well!

  4. We’d love to see some offbeat performances, but I understand that in order to get first-run movies, you must sign up with a franchise and agree to show only what they want you to show.

In any case, they were working on Sheetrock there a couple of months ago, and the fake stucco this week, so it is indeed being repaired to be reopened.
