[NEWSDAY] Judge: Long Beach in default in $50M lawsuit

“Nassau County acting state Supreme Court Justice James P. McCormack has found the City of Long Beach in default in a $50 million damages case tied to a proposed beachfront condominium project.

…..Last September, the City Council rejected the pact, which would have ended the lawsuit and allowed Haberman to submit an application to the zoning board of appeals to build more towers at Sea Pointe Towers on Shore Road. Then-council president Scott Mandel said in a statement that Klein had signed the stipulation without council approval. [LINK]

The city says they plan on filing an appeal. Read the full article @newsday  [LINK]

  1. Municipal bankruptcy is the only way out for Long Beach – its either that, or the taxpayers will be bankrupted from all the bonding (what was already on the books, and now this). Long Beach is in steep decline, papered over with a few summer festivals and some Billy Crystal ads to keep the uninformed taxpayers in a fog thinking everything is just coming up rose. Municipal bankruptcy, followed by a revocation of the City charter – just send us back to the County or the Town of Hempstead.

  2. Lawsuits, disciplinary actions, demotion, shoddy contractor work with attached indictments, never looks in the mirror – the world is against him and always the other guys fault. Truly truly amazing how his mind works. Congrats long beach, we have a real winner living among us.

  3. Thanks for posting. Yes I demand more support, and more of a back bone by every one of our leaders.
I went to the city council, and the corporate attorney (Corey Klein) and demanded transparency. The stipulation was clearly signed, and then canceled. ! When I asked Scot Mandel “Who gave authorization for Corporate attorney to sign such a stipulation?” He his behind “this is alrval matter and we’re advised not to comment. . I knew all along that Mike Zapson (who backed Klein, and every current councilman, and council woman) had/has a conflict of interest. The inactions of this council Who could have just put out a press conference (when they and we found out about this.) express how lethargic their governing practices are.
A press conference would have held Corey Klein(who we have paid a salary for many years) accountable BEFORE his judge election, for his behavior!
I asked Why there wasn’t a press conference, and Fran Adelson allowed political consequences to surpress democratic justice.
Ultimately they dug a hole for themselves and allowed political consequences to hijack our government.
In my opinion, these are people who are our neighbors and have HAD good intentions, but the power has gotten to them in a dangerously systemic way.
Corey Klein confronted me outside of east end pizza after the second council meeting and he shook my hand and didn’t let go(squeezing) repeating over and over to me, “I live here, I have a family, if you want to discuss the issues make an appointment and I’ll see you.”well Corey, I went to your office and called twice, both times getting a run around. The thing is this, if you think that your family, your daughters,my family, my future children are going to be immune to the $50 million lawsuit your only fooling one of us. And unfortunately the fool is the judge.

  5. This is, unfortunately, the comedy of this sad sack group of bureaucrats. At least Mandel finally commented on SOMETHING. What is really extraordinary is the abject corruption that is probably being covered up. The Zapson effect is obvious, but when you get Mandel claiming that the Corp Counsel was running amok, it become hilarious. This is the guy who outlawed questions at Council meetings, right? So he tells us, admits to us, that the Council had no idea what their Corp Counsel was doing? For this admission alone, they should be forced to resign. It’s bad enough that you have Council members that appear to be ill informed and borderline brain damaged, but now we are seeing first hand the ramifications of their inexperience. These judgements had moments in time, recently, when they could have been settled without the residents being forced to pay for them. In spite of the fact that Mandel is allegedly an attorney, he claims ignorance and reaches for a political lifeline. Not a peep out of Goggin? Where is Eramo hiding? Torres have anything to add to this? We get this over and over in Long Beach. Can Zapson’s legal problems come soon enough?

  6. Curley Pubes? May all the misguided asshats of the world call THEMSELVES Curley Pubes!!!!! That is the absolute best! It’s like when a parent gives their kid some terrible name that leaves everyone shaking their heads except you, you beautiful GENIUS, You call yourself Curley Pubes. BWAAAAHAAA HAAAA AAAHAAAAA

  7. I was with Joey when Corey Klein confronted him outside on Park Avenue. It was very unnerving and awkward situation but ultimately the most unnerving situation is the one that Long Beach now finds itself in because of the lack of transparency and responsibility. The one thing that is positive is that the truth always comes out–unfortunately it will be at our expense moving forward.

  8. We in Nassau county and the Town of Hempstead don’t want you. Solve yout owen problems. We already spent twenty five million repairing your baldwalk. And you still charge us to use the beach

  9. Dinald – I wouldnt want us either but unless your last name is fema – buy a pass – better yet, jones beach seems good for you.

  10. Wonderful question. The Council is petrified of Klein. He, allegedly (love that word) threatened all of them with dirty informa on all of them. And the Boy Wonder did the same. Just your ordinary, run of the mill, political thugs. And the residents don’t realize it until they get their tax bills. The only prayer the City has would be if the corruption investigators finally get serious and decide to liberate Long beach from this kind of behavior.

  11. Jay, please get your facts straight. I hate these posts with misinformation! You claim no one in the Corporation Counsel office was fired? Well wasn’t the guy who wanted to run against klein fired from that office? Keep up the good fight.
