My childhood memories belong to Nunley’s which was in Baldwin, but does anybody remember when the Oceanside Nathan’s looked like this? 11053328_10153181594414561_6609892391459081801_n

Below are more images from a reader named Doug, who adds: Before it was Nathan’s of Oceanside it was the Roadside Rest.  The Roadside Rest was opened in 1921 by Leon Shor and Murray Hadfield, It became Nathan’s in 1959.  Here are a couple of photos from the Roadside Rest days.

  1. Anthony, Thanks for briging back wonderful memories! The weekends there were jammed. Motorcycles parked everywhere..even on the sidewalks. it was the meeting place for everything. Thanks again.

  2. new arcade too? All Nathans seem to be the same really, but the arcade is what made the oceanside one special for me. Without the games its just a hotdog shop. Does anyone know if its an arcade as well?

  3. I haven’t been inside yet, but I looked inside and didn’t see an arcade.. I was thinking the same. It’s sad…

Anyway, I updated this post with more photos, including the old Roadside Rest which was pre-Nathan’s

  4. We went before the old location closed and spoke to a man who worked in the arcade. He said they were a separate company from Nathans and would not be at the new location. They were actually selling the arcade games (I really wanted to buy one). Not sure if the new location cut out the arcade totally or went with a different company…

  5. I JUST HAD THE BEST CUP OF COFFEE IN LONG BEACH , UNFORTUNATELY I COULD NOT STAY FOR MORE AT THE NEW LAUREL DINER(LUNCHEONETTE )
    WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE
