Fees. Tax Increases. Raises. Doomsday is near? [Opinion / NSFW (not safe for work)]

chart

The following is my opinion, which includes profanity (I’m Italian. I can’t help it). If you don’t want see any of it: click here.

As you can see above, residents are at the top of the City of Long Beach Organizational Chart. That should mean we get to say what goes, right? Wrong!!! It looks like our wallets are about to be emptied, including all loose change in our pockets. There will be a property tax increase (superblock lawsuit is on our backs). Project 11561 is projecting (pun intended) a 8-11% increase, but ya never know until ya get that bill. Also, many fees are potentially going to be raised, including beach fees (see my post from the other day). As the Westholme Civic puts it:

–Want pour a glass of that sweet Long Beach brown water? it will cost you more
–Want to take a dump? it will cost you more
–Want to put up a sign? it will cost you more
–Want a dog (license)? it will cost you more
–Want a building permit? it will cost you more
–Want to be an electrician? it will cost you more
–Want to get rid of your garbage? it will cost you more
–Want to run a bar or tavern? it will cost you more
–Want to serve food at your bar? it will cost you more
–Want to run a nail salon? In this town who doesn’t? it will cost you more
–Want to go before the zoning board? it might cost you more
–Want to own commercial property on Park or Beech? That will cost you more, $15 per foot. Does that mean the businesses do not need to sweep anymore?
–Bond, James Bond for 12.8 Million for capital improvements
–Some people are planning to retire, it will cost you more. Bond James Bond 2,9 Million [LINK] [City Agenda & Proceedings]

Did I forget to mention how many city workers might be getting a pay raise? SEE: Proposed Annual Budget 2016-2017

All day long I’m reading comments all over facebook how our city by the sea is doomed. So many of my friends are screaming how they’re barely getting by already. I know one young family who recently (and desperately) tried to find a place in Long Beach, only to look out east because there was nothing affordable here that wasn’t a real shit hole. I know of others who are planning to move away because they can’t financially make it here anymore.

Long Beach wants to boost tourism? Well, The Rockaways are booming big time. I am tired of reading about all of it. How the Rockaways are only a subway ride away (no expensive LIRR ticket), PLUS the beach there is FREE!  So, If you live in Brooklyn and want to go to the beach, do you head to Atlantic Terminal to pay $35.00  [$19 off peak train round trip, plus $16 LB beech fee) to come to Long Beach? Or would you rather the $2.75 subway ride to The Rockaways, a free beach that (apparently) is littered with amazing food joints? [numbers will fluctuate depending on the time of day and year]

Fees, taxes and raises? It boggles my mind. To me, this is a further sign how Long Beach is going down the path of being mostly a summer community with empty winter rentals. I’m not worried about the summers here. Our beach is beautiful. Our boardwalk is awesome. It’s the replacing residents with seasonal folks that scares the crap out of me. Pricing residents out will do it. Some rich kid living off a trust fund would love to pay $2000 a week rental so they can get shitfaced with all their trendy friends by the beach, pissing on our lawns and throwing up in cars with open windows (I’m just echoing the current situation in Montauk). I know I’m ranting right now. Just kinda pissed about all this. Plus today is the so-called ‘Star Wars day.’ That certainly pisses me off. May 4th has nothing to do with Star Wars. It’s just some gimmick the internet created years ago. Now all the corporations are cashing in on it. To me, the real Star Wars day is November 17th, The day the holiday special aired. November 17th is Life Day in the Star Wars universe. That is the real day we should be celebrating. Now I can’t really get back on the topic. May the 4th not be with you. Never forget.
