Newsday has an update on the Fagen Trial
Newsday updates us on the Michael Fagen saga:
Friday, September 7th: “Prosecutors balked Friday at a chance to set a trial date for Long Beach City Councilman Michael Fagen, who is accused of illegally collecting more than $14,000 in unemployment benefits.
Fagen, a Democrat, was indicted in February on felony charges of third-degree grand larceny, petty larceny and 38 counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing.” [Via Newsday]
That’s basically all what you can read if you aren’t a Newsday subscriber. For some reason, I can’t access Newsday.com anymore. I think they revoked my login. You’d think we would have some money in the seabythecity budget for newsday subscriptions, but we don’t. Also, is Fagen still a Democrat? He was once a republican, then switched, but lately he’s been in disagreement with our other democratic council members.

Mr. Fagen party affiliation is irrelevant, or should be. This is not a Yankees v. Mets game. Thiis is our city, our housing investment, our businesses, our children’s future. And we need smart, ethical leadership regardless of party affiliation.

It is relevant because most people vote their party lines, regardless of what the politicians stand for. Do you even think half of the voters know what’s going on in the news? No. It’s either democrate or republican in their eyes.

How do you know most people vote party lines? I think most people vote for whoever their friends, neighbors and family seem to support.

I think for small town politics, party doesn’t matter … at least not like it does at the federal level. Didn’t Sea By The City mention something along those lines too last election season?

I agree that for small town politics, party doesn’t matter. I do however wish there were some actual conservatives to vote for. The republican ticket seems to be littered with liberals (or rinos). I’m not debating dem vs repub, just that as a conservative, I don’t seem to have much of a choice in Long Beach. And, as a person who appreciates honesty, I have very little choice whether dem or repub.

In our house, for example, we have voted for candidates from both parties in every single election for the past 11 years, without exception. Personally I’m registered as an independent.

“Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that Fagen, who maintains his innocence, concealed his employment as an elected city official from the New York State Department of Labor, and that he received $405 per week in unemployment insurance benefits beginning in September 2009. Rice also said that Fagen, who was elected to the council that November, failed to disclose to the Labor Department his work as a salesman for a hotel membership benefits company, and continued to receive “undeserved” unemployment benefits. After his swearing-in in January 2010, he falsely certified to the Labor Department every week that he was unemployed, she said.”
“Gann — who has said in the past that he believes the charges against Fagen are politically motivated and have been ‘blown way out of proportion” — said his client has given no indication that he intends to step down.”
