Can you please turn down the bass on your car stereo? It’s kinda loud, I’m trying to sleep, your music sucks and you look like an asshole.

Thank you,

Oh, My Nosy Cup Overflows [The Schwartz Report]

Oh!! I feel as if I hit the jackpot!  Not really, as I do NEED to hit the jackpot, but in terms of filling my insatiable thirst for rumors I just discovered The Schwartz Report.  Yes, every time I say it reminds me of Space Balls, but the forum is full of nasty backstabbing and innuendos and some factual details all blended into perfect wave.  It’s an entertaining read on a chilly day.

The forum has been around for a while so you can go back and read the histrionics of our political battles as well as the rest of Nassau and Suffolk County.  As for many forums no one uses their real name so there are many Unregistered Guests and you wonder where they get the inside scoop and who they are but that’s for another post.

Perhaps you’ve discovered this gem on your own.  Perhaps I need to get a life, but here’s the link.  http://www.theschwartzreport.com/vb/index.php

Enjoy.

Google Quest: View 8-Bit Long Beach [Technology]

8-Bit Video Game fans rejoice! In what appears to be an April Fools joke, Google added a pretty neat feature to Google Maps called Quest. Here is the description:

  • View 8-bit landmarks
  • Be a hero, explore the world
  • Find hidden monsters

8-bit Quest Maps is our Beta Maps technology and has certain system requirements. Your system may not meet the minumum requirements for 8-bit computations.

I am not sure how long this feature will last, but if your house is already on Google Street View, check it out in 8-Bit. I’m not going to post images of mine, but it’s pretty surreal. I didn’t start my quest yet, but I did grab some LB landmark screenshots for your viewing pleasure:

CITY HALL

The Long Island Railroad

The City of Long Beach Welcomes You

On the Planet of the Apes, Long Beach will be underwater. (YOU DAMN DIRTY APE)

My friend just forwarded me this link which I found to be kinda funny. Taken from the APES WILL RISE blog is a map of the Ape City and Forbidden Zone (not related to this). As illustrated in the bottom image, on that map is Long Beach (sort of). Actually, during this time of the apes, Long Beach appears to be underwater. So make sure you plan for the ape-apocalypse accordingly. Pack a life raft.

Slow news day? No, I’m just not terribly interested in what’s going on these days; it’s been a major snooze-fest. Besides, this is a blog and blogs are supposed to post silly stuff like this.

I am not quite sure what Ape movie or TV show the top image is from. I am guessing the TV show since I know the movies so well.

Funny conversation overheard on the boardwalk (Kelly Slater playing Volleyball?)

While sipping my coffee & strolling on the boardwalk, I overheard this crazy conversion. I had to pace myself right behind the couple talking because I couldn’t wait for it to be resolved. It was almost like a Three’s Company episode: misunderstandings galore.

This is almost verbatim, as I tried to remember all I could. Oh and the lady had the thickest Long Island accent I ever heard, which added to the hilarity.

Lady: You shouda seen the large volleyball tournament that went on here a few months ago. The beach was loaded with so many people.

Man: Oh yeah? Was it fun?

Lady: Oh it was amazing. So many people here to see it. Kelly Slater was even here.

Man: To watch?

Lady: oh no, he participated. He’s the best at it yah know. And he almost won too. That woulda been somethin’ else I tell ya.

Man: Wow, that guys does everything I guess.

Lady: He was jumping so high. It was a sight to see.

Man: Yeah, Well you need to jump high to get the ball over the net.

Lady: Huh? No the waves.. the waves were big. So he was jumping them.

Man: Waves? Oh so they played in the ocean?

Lady: Of course, where else would they do it?

Man: I just figured on the sand.

Lady: I never saw that before. Well anyways, it was so much fun, but I heard they aren’t coming back next year.

Man: Wait, you mean that surfing tournament.

Lady: Yes surfin, what did ya think?

Man: (laughing) You said volleyball.

Lady: ohhh.. hahaha nooo… surfin, SURFIN. NOT VOLLEYBAWL! It was the Surfin tounrament. Quikpro-somethin…….

Man: haha yeah I heard about it.

Anyways, I’m sure it’s one of those things where you had to be there, but I was amused.

L’EGGO MY LOGO! (The West End Beautification Logo Saga)

The West End Beautification Association just spelled out the entire logo saga on their blog with documents and everything (read – Introducing the new West End Beautification Association logo!)

From what I understand, here are the chain of events:

1. West End residents Mary Ellen and Judy formed the West End Beautification Association (WEBA): A committee that is separate and independent from the West End Neighbors Civil Association (WENCA) with the sole purpose of beautifying the West End of Long Beach.

2. Mary Ellen’s daughter created the WEBA logo. (click to see example).

3. In December, WENCA’s attorneys sent WEBA a “cease and desist” letter. Basically telling Mary Ellen that she is legally not allowed to use the logo that her daughter created, for it has been trademarked by WENCA (click to see document).

So where are we now?

WEBA just annouced their new logo on January 19th:

Now, I have nothing against WENCA. I don’t even live in the West End, but what WENCA did was neither NEIGHBORLY nor CIVIC. I personally think they should just forfeit the logo and move on. For, as long as they use it – the flower on that logo will forever be obscurd by a dark cloud. Yep, this one is added to the WTF category.

Poop & Paper (a rant & a mystery)

POOP RANT

I’ve lived all over this general area my entire life –  grew up on the South Shore, lived a few years on the North, Manhattan for college, three different towns in Queens and here I am back on Long Island (which I never thought would return to). Long Beach was the only area that could lure me back to the island and I absolutely love it here. Everything about it is great – the beach, boardwalk, restaurants, events & community, etc (you know how great all this stuff is). There is one thing wrong with Long Beach that constantly irks me: People’s lack of respect for their neighbors. I’m obviously not talking about every LB resident, but please hear me out.

Never in my life have I seen an area where people just don’t give a shit about their neighbors. Actually, they do give a shit – they give me dog poop several times a week. At first I thought somebody had it out for me, but walking around town I’ve noticed my property wasn’t the only one that gets soiled. Yep, this town is brown. Poop by the City by the Sea. I have concluded that some people (aka assholes) around here don’t respect their neighbors at all. I have lived in far more dense/suburban areas and NEVER had or saw a problem like this to this extent before. Seriously.

It’s not just dog poop – The Empty Bud Lite Beer Can parade that spans mulitple blocks usually comes to town every few weeks. Or those greasy McDonalds bags that are consistently left in front of my house every two weeks (I can set my watch to it). I have seen people actually throw garbage out of their cars. And we complain why our taxes are so high… somebody has to clean this garbage up.  I never saw so much garbage around a town in my life. I am sorry, but it’s true. Again, I’m not accusing every LB resident for this sloppiness.. I am generalizing here.. but there is an awful amount of garbage on our streets. Geez, have some civic pride for once.

If you can’t see what I’m saying then please do me this favor: Go on a small trip to a similar type of town and see for yourself how much cleaner it is. Go anywhere. You will see.

Dog poop is my biggest issue because it’s just plain disgusting and unsanitary. I don’t blame the dogs, I blame their owners. Come on folks, please respect your neighbors and curb your dogs. Please give a shit by not giving shit.

I write this now knowing that in a few hours I’m going to return home to a nice fresh pile of poop. I cannot wait.

PAPER MYSTERY

Add this one to the WTF category: Has anybody had their paper recycling picked up by a mysterious pickup truck? This happened to me twice already that I know of; not sequentially, but months apart. I can’t come up with any explaination for this. Mystery truck pulls up, a guy runs out and dumps my recycling (only the paper stuff) into the back of his truck and drives away- ignoring all the other recycling bins on my street. This guy doesn’t look like the type that can hack into my accounts and steal my identity.. no offense mister, if you’re reading this.. I just don’t get it.

Anyways, has this happened to anybody else?

Pier 1 Imports is NOT exporting after all.

Pier 1 lovers rejoice! After weeks of speculation and drama, it turns out Pier 1 Imports is not closing the Long Beach location after all. Even tough they had a giant BE BACK SOON sign on the facade, their website made us believe that the Long Beach location was closing. Not to mention that the store was completely gutted clean and showed no life for a few weeks. Susan, who gave is the original scoop, just updated us with this email:

Dear Susan,

Thank you for contacting us on our website.

Please allow us to apologize for any unintentional misunderstanding in reference to the closing of our Store #0706 located at Long Beach, New York.

The information you requested is included below for your convenience. The last day of sales was Wednesday July 20, 2011 Store is estimated to reopen Monday October 17, 2011.
Thank you for thinking of Pier 1 for your shopping needs. You are a valued customer and we look forward to many future opportunities to serve you.

Customer Relations,
Representative Pier 1 Imports

So hopefully you have enough candles and home décor that will last you until the end of October. Based on pure observation, It looks like they’re moving the main entrance from the sidewalk to the parking lot side.  Apparently that takes four months to do. How long did it take to build the Empire State Building? A year and 45 days, right?

bridge over troubled water

This goes in the WTF category. I was just poking around facebook and found a group named “We want better access to Long Beach, NY” and get this, they are calling for a bridge that connects Long Beach Road in Island Park to the Meadowbrook Parkway.  Here is the group’s description:

This group’s sole objective is to create better access to Long Beach NY. The primary proposal is to have a highway spanning from the bridge between long beach and Island Park to the Meadowbrook parkway

bridge

The reason why I am calling some attention to this is because the group actually has 76 members, including a local politician. Ok, so here are my thoughts and please bare with me.

A bridge that far will not only be detrimental to the channel, but it would cost a boat load of money – something NY State doesn’t have.  If any new bridge is going to be built in the NY area, it’s not going to be there. It only takes about 10 minutes to get from Long Beach Road to Loop Parkway with our current Park Ave/Lido Blvd  situation. A bridge would probably cut those minutes down to maybe 5? Not only that, but I drive on that road every single day during rush hour and it’s really not that bad. It gets slow with all the lights, but it’s not enough to destroy Reynold’s Channel over.

I’m not sure if that facebook group is actually a gag, but I like to post whatever I find interesting about Long Beach and boy.. that proposal is uh…. interesting….  It’s something fun to talk about.
