Long Beach Update: August 25th Edition [A slow blog week for me]

Long Beach & Vicinity News/Rumors/Opinions:

  • Regarding that fake store in Oceanside that sells Gorilla meat, I reported that Netflix show that’s being filmed is called ‘Maniac,’ Newday says that was the original name, it’s now called ‘Ronald.’  [SEABYTHECITY] [NEWSDAY]
  • Long Beach City Council Candidate John Bendo speaks the truth when he says Long Beach shouldn’t screw up free lunch [Army Corp needs to continue working]. I posted a similar opinion a few weeks ago. Let them finish. We can deal with it. This project is too important to delay. [LB HERALD]
  • Last, but not least. The Verge is reporting how drones are going to deliver hamburgers and beer in Iceland [VERGE]. I was once an advocate of drone delivery for our beach [SBTC]. I don’t know now. First of all, wow, would that be annoying having these hovering over our heads all day. But what happens if the artificial intelligence of these flying devices get to the point where we have to start worrying about them turning against us? I think it’s imperative for our City Manager and City Council to immediately enforce the Three Laws of the Robotics, as outlined by science fiction author Isaac Asimov. These laws should be applied to all drones usage within our city limits. You can laugh about it now, but don’t come running to me when pizza drones start attacking.

Long Beach Update: August 22nd Edition

ECLIPSE:

At first I didn’t think I filmed the eclipse, but I did! This is from an iphone on a tripod with timelapse for 15  minutes. That bright stuff is lens flare.

Didn’t get the eclipse, but I did get some sky movement

Long Beach & Vicinity News, Rumors, Opinions:

  • I’m hearing that Jonah Hill and Emma Stone are filming in Oceanside for a Netflix series called Maniac.
  • Cops and robbers [NEWSDAY]
  • DuMont’s Modern America Buffet & Sushi, which has seafood and sushi and sushi  just posted a sign with their hours. Like the larger sign says, they are open for lunch and dinner. (Thank you, Richard for the photo)

Resident’s Corner:

( If you have a question, concern, comment that you’d like posted on this blog, please contact me. )

  • A followup to a post from last week:
“Just wanted to let you know that the rocks have been removed from the handicap parking spots! Thank you so much for posting my email..power of the blog! Haha  Have a great rest of the summer! -Whitney”
  • From Richard Boodman: “Filthy sidewalksMy choice for dirtiest block is the south side of East Park Ave between Riverside and Edwards Blvd. Super Pollo 18 E.Park Ave, Los Latinos 24 E.Park Ave, The Cuban. 26 .E.Park Ave, La Bottega.  36 E.Park Ave. The filth is from the leaking food containers. The sidewalks are stained.
Power washing and serious scrubbing is needed.”
  • Anther resident is concerned over the leaking showers on the boardwalk ramps:

EMAIL: I know that you are righteously concerned about city water use. I have noticed that the beach shower at the base of the Lincoln ramp is often dribbling when it is not in use. Sometimes it is even wasting water at more than a dribble. Jiggling the handle stops the water waste, but most users just release the handle and walk away. Maybe a bit of maintenance/ lubrication would do the trick. Maybe this is happening at other showers.

ANSWER FROM PUBLIC WORKS: Thanks for your email. Unfortunately sand and shower fixtures are not compatible. When the slightest bit of sand gets in the automatic faucet they clog in the open position.  The auto faucets are still better then manual which people would leave on all the time. Our beach staff cleans them as they become issues and we are trying some different type of auto faucets to see if there is a better one out there – Commissioner of Public Works

Long Beach Update: August 15th Edition

Long Beach & Nassau County News:

  • “Long Beach schools chief David Weiss leaving for new post”[NEWSDAY]
  • Officials, like the one mentioned in the previous article, want the speed limit on Lido blvd to be 30mph. I’m totally fine with this, but the stoplight timing is terrible. Rush hour waiting at almost every red light creates lots of impatient drivers attempting to fly through them all. It is a six lane highway. They should have brought it down to at least five with a bike lane and wider sidewalks. Leave three lanes for evacuation & two lanes going west. With properly timed lights, there would be no traffic with a lane reduction. Buuuut they just spent a fortune not too long ago ‘fixing’ all this….  TOO LATE NOW! [NEWSDAY]
  • NASSAU COUNTY: I love this article in [NEWSDAY]. Nassau Hub is outdated. NO S**** SHERLOCK! That entire area is a complete mess that is designed to create nothing, but more traffic. They could have had something special. My favorite quote is the following: “The existing plan is nothing more than a 20th century office park,” said Ann Golob, director of the Long Island Index, a Garden City-based group led by civic, academic, labor and business leaders which produces nonpartisan reports on housing, employment, transportation and the environment. “And that doesn’t make sense in the 21st century.”
  • NASSAU COUNTY: While we are on the topic of Nassau County, my opinion above also includes the Roosevelt Racetrack area, where they are building this fancy Vanderbilt building that has lovely views of Lowe’s Home Improvement, Target and a giant water tower. The stupid mall is down the block and these residents won’t even be able to walk to it! Just look at this place: vanderbiltlongisland.com
  • Island Park comes in third when it comes to herion arrests in Nassau County [LB HERALD]
  • Long Beach get a $250k State Grant for some cool stuff. Just please by the right bike racks that will last a very long time. None of this cheap blue stuff that breaks and rusts.  [LB Patch]

Resident’s Corner:

(A new category! If you have a question, concern, comment that you’d like posted on this blog, please contact me. )

  • From a resident named Whitney: “I have a situation and  I didn’t know who else to ask for help. There are two big pile of rocks that have been in the handicap spot on broadway and New York for over 3 months and I reported it to Long Beach app with a photo 2 weeks ago And it says they haven’t even opened the request.  How do I get these rocks removed?!? As we know handicap parking is already limited in LB.thank you in advance for your help.
  • From Richard Boodman: “8 points, Illegal U, Wrong side of the road, Running a red light – On Broadway all day. We can replace the broken streets with the revenue.”
  • Also from Richard Boodman: “Mushrooms. Growing on the median below the  dog waste bag holder on Monroe and Olive.”
