Miniature Golf is coming [Barefoot MiniGolf to open next week!]

minigolflocationMiniature golf is coming to a superblock near you! Barefoot Minigolf is the name. This 18 hole course will be located at the corner of the boardwalk and Riverside Blvd right next to shoregasboard food trucks.

The organizers are a couple of local families who are determined to bring more family entertainment to Long Beach. With the help of the city and iStar, their dream will become a reality as early as next week. The goal is to officially open on Thursday,  July 17th.

So far the course will feature an 8ft lighthouse and a loop-de-loop. Other hazards/obstacles will be added as the weeks goes by. The organizers want the course to reflect a nautical beach theme. Set in sand, no shoes are required! Also on location will be picnic tables for parties. Hours and price to be determined, but they will open early once a week for special needs groups to play at no charge.

The organizers have some amazing plans for the future, which I cannot wait to share with you all. This is just a sneak peak, so stay tuned!

Nickerson Beach Miniature Golf Update

I enthusiastically blogged back in May of 2010 about Nassau County’s plan to bring a mini-golf course over at Nickerson Beach (880 Lido Boulevard, Lido beach). At that time, I contacted Nassau Legislator (AND LONG BEACH RESIDENT!) Denise Ford, who told me:

I received (a letter) from the Commissioner of Parks.  He indicated that this project will go out to bid, as required, and he is hoping that the work will begin in the summer so the miniature golf will not be available this summer in Nickerson.  Like yourself, I am looking forward to miniature golf.  Leg Denise Ford

A few months ago I contacted Legislator Ford again for a 2011 update. She told me it was still in the works: I will let you know about the miniature golf.  I thought it would be installed this year and now I am not so sure.

Here we are in September and finally some news! From Newsday, Sept 17th, 2011 (article – Nassau eyes upgrades to Nickerson Beach), Emily C. Dooley writes:

Nassau County is looking to upgrade the Nickerson Beach Recreational Facility in Lido Beach with more cabanas, expanded campgrounds and a new mini-golf course…..Proposals are due by 3 p.m. Sept. 27

Below is a screenshot of the project, which you can find on the Nassau County 2011 Capital Budget & 2011-2014 Capital Improvement Plan.

Of course, this doesn’t all happen without a sacrifice. While I appreciate Nassau County’s decision on bringing us this fun recreation to Nickerson, I’m upset about the closing of another park – The Garvies Point Musuem and Presevre. The reason being? It’s not “revenue producing.” I had no idea parks were supposed to make money! I know this last part isn’t Long Beach related, but Garvies Point is a gem and will be missed. Parks shouldn’t close, I don’t care how much of a deficit we are in.

Anyways, Mini-golf coming to our barrier Island! WOOHOO!

Nickerson Beach Mini Golf update

I took the liberty of emailing our Nassau legislator Denise Ford regarding the Nickerson beach Miniature Gold course and here is what she said:

I received (a letter) from the Commissioner of Parks.  He indicated that this project will go out to bid, as required, and he is hoping that the work will begin in the summer so the miniature golf will not be available this summer in Nickerson.  Like yourself, I am looking forward to miniature golf.  Leg Denise Ford

Of course I figured this wouldn’t be done over night, but it’s still totally awesome that it’s moving forward. I’m glad that it’s not just something that was mentioned as a ‘possibility’ – like the proposed zoo for Eisenhower Park that Tom Suozzi mentioned a few years back….  Anyways, kudos to Denise Ford for getting back to me on this subject.

Miniature Golf Course? YES!!!!!

Who else got a letter this week from Nassau legislator Denise Ford that mentions Miniature Golf for Nickerson Beach? That is totally awesome!   I welcome ALL fun activities to our area. Projects like these are exactly what government should be working on!  I really hope it comes to fruition.

Also mentioned in the letter:  improvements to the county owned parking malls in Long Beach as well as a traffic study for Austin Blvd in Island Park – aka similar medians that Lido got last year on Lido Blvd.

Here is a traffic study for ya, they don’t work!!!  I drive past those medians every day and people are driving faster than ever.  Here is an unpopular fix that would make things safer, reduce the amount of lanes from 3 to 2 and widen the sidewalks and add a bike lane!!  But NOOOOOOOOOOO. This is Long Island. That would never happen. We love our cars here – especially when we can drive 80 in a 40mph zone.
