This event raises money for TEAM Robert Browne, a local young man paralyzed in a surfing accident.

MOKU SURF TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL LONG BEACH LONGBOARD CLASSIC (Saturday, September 13th)

longbeachnySurfing Enthusiasts of All Ages Will Compete on September 13, 2015 at 8 a.m.

September 2, 2014 – Long Beach, NY – Not since the 1960’s has Long Beach been home to a traditional vintage long board competition, but on Saturday, September 13th, 60 participants will make surfing history using only single fin long boards.

Contestants, who range in age from nine to 65, will be scored by classic contest criteria such as nose rides, hanging ten, cheater fives, drop knee turns, fin first takeoffs, spinners, length of ride and cross-stepping style and extra points will be scored for riding vintage logs with no leashes.   Surfing Hall of Famer, Claude Codgen will be among the competition’s judging panel.

The event, which kicks off at 8 a.m. (with a rain date of Sunday, September 14th) on Long Beach Road, will also include a D.J. to add to the festivities.  Swing Bellies BBQ will also be available for a participants as well as an after party at the Long Beach Hotel featuring local act, Steel Horse performing live.   More than 70 local and national companies have lent their support to this inaugural event through the sponsorship of prizes.

MOKU Surf is the only Hawaiian style surf shop in the New York metropolitan area.  It carries a large selection of classic and performance style long and short surfboards, fishes and hybrids, along with several clothing lines, unique gifts and accessories.  Many of MOKU’s surfboards are hand shaped in Hawaii and there is a unique collection of vintage surfboards on display for the viewing public.   Surf lessons and board rentals are also available for those who are new to the sport.

“Surfing brings together a community who love what they do together in the water and its popularity continues to skyrocket”, states MOKU co-owner, Kevin Sime.  “This Classic will no doubt be an annual event – one that will be exciting for the entire family to witness.
