Rec Center Improvements (A Step in the Right Direction)

We all dream of having a world class fitness center in Long Beach – though I think having a beach and an ocean meets much of that requirement – but we’ve been forced to tolerate our “crumbling” bay-side Rec Center.

In continuing the PR/Communications onslaught that has been a hallmark of the new administration (and much needed change), a message by-lined by Parks Commissioner Robert Piazza has been posted on Long Beach’s website.

Piazza says their goals are to “provide courteous, efficient, and effective services to our users,” and goes on to highlight a number of moves they’ve taken as direct results of customers suggestions.

Some of the points are a bit general like “keep customers informed” or “post the water and air temperature,” but quite a number of them are real fixes for real problems. It’s easy to call them minor – my favorite example being “fix the front door so it doesn’t slam” – but these minor, easy, and most importantly, cheap fixes will be seen by customers everyday.  I emphasize cheap, because realistically, those are the only fixes we are getting for sometime.  There’s a bit of a fiscal disaster leftover in this town.

Later Piazza talks about the shower water being too hot, and their solution was to replace a mixing valve. While you might say “wouldn’t it be awesome to get 100 new TVs and top notch fitness equipment,” you’ll certainly be satisfied when you don’t get scalded/frozen when you step foot in the shower.

I’ve got to get myself into that pool and start training for a triathlon soon, so I’ll give you some on the ground (and in the water) reports in coming weeks about the progress at the Rec Center. Take a look at Piazza’s post here.

You can read about the dreams Bernie Shereck had for the Rec Center here before he was allegedly illegally evicted, for which he is suing the city.

The Long Beach Recreation Center (Rink Dreams “On” for Evicted Long Beach Operator)

Former operator Bernie Shereck had big plans for the Long Beach Recreation Center, which was to include: A gymnasium overlooking Reynolds Channel complete with an indoor oval track, basketball courts, upgraded ballpark, refurbished ice arena and bulkhead family restaurant.

In his article titled Rink Dreams “On” for Evicted Long Beach Operator, Ray Thuman writes about this missed opportunity: “Considering the state of affairs in Long Beach, along with Moody’s recent credit-rating downgrade, it’s seems ironic that the City could probably use Bernie now more than ever.”

The last Recreation Center news that I heard was almost a year ago in the LB Patch, which mentioned a new swimming pool. I’m still waiting for that new swimming pool.

Personally, I think Bernie Shereck’s’ vision was absolutely beautiful and would love for the city to somehow revisit it, but of course there is a lawsuit in the way (Athletic Business NewsCivil Actions – City Evicts Arena Operator Who Contends He Holds Five-Year Lease).

So here we are today while our Rec Center just sits there and rusts. Hopefully City Manager Jack the New Gang can get things going again. In the meantime, head over to LI News Chronicles and read: Rink Dreams “On” for Evicted Long Beach Operator).
