Walk Score

Long Beach has to be one of the few places on Long Island where you can get away without having a car. We can walk to the train, to the beach, to stores, restaurants. Plus we have our own bus system and several taxi services; Not to mention how bike friendly the area is. All of this is measured on walkscore.com as a “walk score.”

What is a walk score? Well according to the site:

“Walk Score helps people find walkable places to live. Walk Score calculates the walkability of an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc. Walk Score measures how easy it is to live a car-lite lifestyle—not how pretty the area is for walking.

Long Beach has a walk score of 88 out of 100 which means the area as a whole is “Very Walkable: It’s possible to get by without owning a car.

You can get a more detailed “walk score” if you type in your address. My house has a walk score as 80 – just below the Long Beach average, but I am sure there are some parts especially near the train station that would score higher. Try it out yourself! walkscore.com
